Parker — Setup guide

Parker is an editorial-bookshop theme with two styles — Classic and Contemporary — switchable in Customize → Theme settings → Style.

The theme works out of the box. Everything below is optional: if you don't create a field, the theme simply hides that data — nothing breaks. This guide is for reproducing the full demo store.

1. Styles

Choose the look in Customize → Theme settings → Style:

The palette and typography switch together; no other setup needed.

2. Product metafields

Create them in Settings → Custom data → Metafields → Products, with scope “All products” (not category-scoped). The namespace.key and type must match exactly:

NameNamespace & keyTypeUsed for
Authorcustom.authorSingle line textAuthor name under each book
Quotecustom.quoteMulti-line textFeatured quote for the book
Yearcustom.publication_yearIntegerSort by date, details
Pagescustom.pagesIntegerBook details
Editioncustom.editionSingle line textBook details
ISBNcustom.isbnSingle line textBook details

Optional:

NameNamespace & keyTypeUsed for
Size guidecustom.size_guideMulti-line textSize table on merch (col|col per line)
Genreshopify.genreStandard taxonomyGenre filter in the catalogue
⚠️ The author lives in two places: the custom.author metafield (to display it) and the product's Vendor field (so author collections gather their books automatically). Use the same name in both.

3. Collection metafields

Settings → Custom data → Metafields → Collections:

NameNamespace & keyTypeUsed for
Subtitlecustom.subtitleSingle line textLine under the author name (e.g. “Valencia, 1979”)
Quotecustom.quoteMulti-line textAuthor quote on their page

4. Collections

Create these collections. The bold handles must be kept (the home page links to them):

CollectionHandleTypeCondition
BooksbooksAutomatedProduct type = Book
FeaturedfeaturedAutomatedTag = Featured
MerchmerchAutomatedProduct type = Merch
(each author)name-in-lowercaseAutomatedVendor = “Author name”

Author collections also need: template author (Customize the collection template → choose “author”), the author's portrait as the image, and the custom.subtitle / custom.quote metafields.

5. Pages

Create these pages and assign their template (Online Store → Pages → template):

PageTemplateNotes
Authorspage.authorsAuthor list. Linked from home (/pages/authors) — keep the handle authors.
Aboutpage.about
Contactpage.contact
FAQpage.faq
Selectionpage.featuredCatalogue + featured (optional).

The home “Book of the month” section points to the product with handle cuaderno-de-sal in the demo. Change it in Customize → Book of the month → Product.

7. Background images

The theme ships with demo backgrounds. To change them, go to Customize and upload your own in each section (Hero, Banner pair, headers, About). Recommended ~2400 px wide.

8. Languages

The theme's default language is English. To add another language, install Translate & Adapt (free, by Shopify) → add the language → Auto-translate → review. The theme already emits hreflang and includes a language + country/currency selector in the footer.

FAQ

Do I need all the metafields?

No. They're all optional — the theme hides any data you don't provide. Add only what you want to show.

Why doesn't the author collection show any books?

Author collections gather books by Vendor. Make sure each book's Vendor field matches the author name exactly.

The country/currency selector doesn't appear.

It only shows when your store has more than one market/currency. Set up at least two in Settings → Markets.

How do I switch between Classic and Contemporary?

Customize → Theme settings → Style. The whole palette and typography switch together.
